I have always been interested in investigating an “in between” social and cultural space: a space that I believe many people within our generation occupy. This in between space avoids categorization, specification, or adherence to normative classifications. Existing within this space has formed the way that I examine the world and present myself. There are various methods and systems that I use in order to work through the idea of being in between, through analogue and digital modes of making, as well as processes such as photographic collage and recreating these collages into ceramic objects.
My recent work uses collage to create constructed landscapes and object arrangements that are translated into ceramics as well as a larger installation. The patterns and color of the images and objects are references to Korean Dansaekhwa painting. This monochrome style of painting emphasizes the act of going back to nature through accretion and layering, repetition, and silent observation.
